Mexico is for the most part very cheap to backpack through and incredible. You will be OK as long as you steer clear of places like Cancun. Mexico features Bed and Breakfasts and hostels at excellent prices as with many slightly economically depressed countries. Plan to see a volcano in Toluca, Mexico City and the commercial capital of the country, the Mayan Ruins of Tulum, and if you have time go white water rafting in Veracruz.
