In this Europe Travel Backpack, the Haute Route, you will see the best group of 4,000 meter peaks in the Alps! Many people say this is one of the best hikes on the globe. That is a matter of personal taste, but I have to say this hike is one of the very best! Also, it is one of the best in Europe.
The Haute Route is a high altitude hiking trail that runs across mountain passes from Chamonix, France, to Zermatt, Switzerland. This trek is where the sport of mountaineering was born. 10 of the 12 highest summits in the Alps, including the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, rise along this terrific high trail.
An incredible hike crosses 10 alpine passes and 11 glaciers yet you never climb above 10,000 feet as you follow this route below some of the most incredible summits in the Alps, including the Dent Blanche, the Grand Combin, and the beautiful pyramid of the Weisshorn. You can spend the night in small lodges or hotels, to view spectacular sunset panoramas of the high peaks.

This Europe Travel Backpack is very tough. A lot of hiking experience is recommended. Backpacking is between 6,000 and 8,000 feet, with the maximum around 9,700 feet. There are ups and downs during the backpacking, with 3,000 to 4,000 feet gains and losses each day. These are strenuous treks, so you must be in your best physical condition.
You stay in small hotels, some with shared bath. With all this hiking, you should restrict your luggage to 1 piece, and your backpack.
On most days you'll carry just a daypack, but on one particular 3 day, 2 night stretch, you can't reach mountain locations after dark. For this hike, you must carry in a backpack, a 3 days supply. A majority of medium sized backpacks have enough room for extra gear.
It is highly recommended that you train for the Europe travel backpack before you arrive. The best training is over rough terrain or hills. Stair climbing machines are great preparation for hiking ascents. Include training into your daily schedule at least a couple of months before leaving on your trip. Make sure you have sturdy and comfortable hiking boots.
Altitude is usually not a problem for most people on these hikes. Backpacking will take you slowly to higher altitude, giving you time to adjust. The most common problems some people get is a slight headache, this and sleeplessness.
The hotels are old, in good locations, and busy in the summer season. These are not 5 star resorts, they are hikers' hotels. Rooms are comfortable and clean, but are not always of equal amenities or size. All people experience equal comfort throughout the trip. There are shared bathrooms in some of the hotels. Some may have to share a room for up to 4 nights during the trip, but single rooms are offered when possible.
You enjoy some of the best views in all Switzerland, when ascending the Augstbordpass at 9,495 feet, then descend to Zermatt, which is surrounded by 12 thirteen thousand foot summits, best known is the Matterhorn.
You should be experienced and confident to attempt a long and complex hike like this by yourself. Many backpackers sign on with a tour instead. Research the information. Some outfitters will move your luggage hut to hut. Good luck on your Europe travel backpack and good hiking!
