As part of a Boy Scout project, at age 14 Wayne Gregory designed his first backpack. Shortly after this experience, at a boy scout camporee, he met the founder of San Diego California Adventure 16, Andy Drollinger. Over the next few years Wayne could be found hanging around the Adventure 16 factory, tinkering with a variety of backpack ideas and buying raw materials, after Andy was impressed with Wayne's design. He was to become the young companies second employee.

With a goal to produce advanced external frame packs, Wayne started his first company, Sunbird, in 1970. He dissolved the company in 1973, unhappy with the limitations of externals, and began working as a freelance designer of technical apparel, tents, and sleeping bags in the newly emerging outdoor specialty industry for a number of companies. He decided it was time to get back to his first love, designing backpacks, and in 1977 Wayne founded Gregory Mountain Products in San Diego, California, intrigued with new directions in internal frame concepts and soft packs.

A heritage of accessibility he has continued to present, from the start, Wayne wasn't just meticulous about designing packs that used the best materials available and improved upon fit, he also wanted to know what he could do better and how his designs worked in the field. Where he built his packs in the back shop, at his retail store in San Diego, he loved to talk tech with customers in the early days. Many customers' ideas were incorporated in new products, and he wanted to know firsthand what worked and what didn't.

Wayne pioneered many firsts, including; developing the center locking bar tack, a stitch that locks off and ends on the center of a seam instead of the side for increased strength at major stress points; the first and only backpack manufacturer to develop a waistbelt system that adjusts to fit different hip angles, automatically improving load transfer; being the first to build backpacks in different waist belt sizes, harness and frame, and ultimately, he realized that in the backpack business fit was king. From the beginning, their obsession with durability, comfort and quality continues today, and Gregory packs were noted for comfortable fit, ergonomic and innovative design.
